Can an expired pregnancy test show a false positive?

I took a home pregnancy test this morning and it showed a faint positive, but then I noticed the test kit was expired. I'm really confused and anxious now. Can an expired pregnancy test give a false positive result?

Just like expired food products can have chemical changes, expired testing kits are highly unreliable. The chemical reagents on the strip degrade over time and can show incorrect results. It is best to discard it and buy a fresh kit from the pharmacy.

Bro, never trust an expired kit. My partner and I went through a major panic because of a faint line on an old kit we found in the drawer. We bought two fresh ones from the medical store the next morning and they were completely negative. Just get a new one.

I wouldn't trust an expired test any more than I'd trust a week-old samosa left on the counter! The chemicals inside definitely go bad and can give weird, wrong lines. Treat yourself to a fresh test and maybe some nice comfort food while you wait for the real result.

I panicked so much when an old kit showed a faint positive line, but then I realized the box had expired a year ago. A fresh test showed a clear negative, and my doctor confirmed expired tests are just not accurate. Take a deep breath and test again with a new kit.

My gynaecologist explained that the antibodies on the test strip break down after the expiration date. This degradation can prevent the control line from showing correctly or cause evaporation lines that look like a positive. For accurate results, always check the expiry date on the foil pouch before testing.
