Can a uti cause a false negative pregnancy test?

I had a UTI last month, and my period is now late. I took a pregnancy test, but it was negative. I'm confused – can having a UTI cause a false negative pregnancy test result?

Actually, a UTI shouldn't cause a false negative because pregnancy tests look for the hCG hormone, while a UTI is just a bacterial infection. But if you are drinking massive amounts of water to flush out the UTI, it can dilute your urine and make the hCG harder to detect. Try testing again with your first morning pee once you feel a bit better!

I can only share my own experience, but when I had a bad UTI last year, my pregnancy test was still completely accurate. The doctor told me the infection itself doesn't interfere with the hormone levels the kit is measuring. If you missed your period, it's best to wait a couple of days and test again or get a blood test.

No, a UTI usually does not affect the pregnancy test results. However, if your period is delayed and you still have symptoms of infection, please visit a doctor for proper guidance. Take care.

I know how stressful it is to deal with a burning UTI while wondering if you might be pregnant. Drinking tons of water is great for flushing out bacteria, but it also dilutes your urine, which can lead to a false negative on home tests. Try to limit water for a few hours before testing, or better yet, get a blood test done at a lab.

There is a lot of misinformation online, but scientifically, a UTI does not alter the hCG hormone required for a pregnancy test. If you are getting negative results but still haven't got your period, don't rely on random forum advice. Go to a diagnostic lab for a beta-hCG blood test and see a doctor for your UTI.

Arey beta, don't worry. A urinary tract infection only shows bacteria and white blood cells in your urine, which won't hide a pregnancy on a test strip. If you have a UTI, you need proper antibiotics from a doctor anyway, so just mention your missed period to them and they will do a reliable blood test for you.
