Can a non diabetic take metformin to lose weight?

I've been trying to lose weight for a while now, and a friend mentioned that her doctor prescribed Metformin for her diabetes, but it also helped her lose weight. I don't have diabetes, but I'm curious. Can a non-diabetic person take Metformin for weight loss?

Why take heavy medicines for weight loss when simple changes can help? Try adding cinnamon and fenugreek to your diet, and do regular walks. If you still want to take prescription pills, please see a qualified doctor instead of self-medicating.

I was looking into this because of all the weight loss trends online. Metformin is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss in people with insulin resistance or PCOS, but it is not a magic pill. It can have nasty side effects like diarrhea and stomach cramps, so definitely talk to a doctor first.

Haan na, everyone wants a shortcut for weight loss nowadays. But taking diabetic medicine when you don't have diabetes is not right without a doctor's advice. It can make your blood sugar drop or upset your stomach badly.

Haan, some people do take it for weight loss, especially if they have insulin issues, na. But you should never buy it directly from the pharmacy. Get your fasting insulin checked and let a proper doctor decide the dose.

My doctor actually put me on metformin for weight management because I had severe prediabetes and insulin resistance. It helped, but the initial stomach upset was quite bad. Don't start it on your own without getting your blood tests done first.
