Can a high fever cause brain damage?

My son had dengue last year, and his fever was really high for a few days before it came down. My neighbour was telling me that such high fevers can sometimes damage the brain, especially in children. Is this true, or just a myth?

I actually asked my family physician about this during a bad bout of dengue. He told me that a normal fever from an infection—even if it's high like 103 or 104—rarely causes brain damage because the brain's internal thermostat keeps it under control. The real danger of brain damage comes if the body temperature reaches extreme limits like 107°F, which usually happens in severe heatstroke or rare medical emergencies, not standard fevers.

As someone managing diabetes, any high fever makes me very cautious because it spikes my blood sugar levels too. I always keep coconut water and light broths ready to stay hydrated without raising my sugar. While a typical fever won't cause brain damage, you still need to monitor it closely and consult your doctor if it doesn't come down.

When running a high fever, I strictly stick to easily digestible, light vegetarian meals like moong dal khichdi or warm vegetable soups to keep my energy up. While brain damage from a typical fever is extremely rare, keeping your body nourished and hydrated is key to helping it fight off the infection safely.

When you have a high fever, your body is already under immense stress, so forget about your workouts and focus entirely on resting. A regular fever won't cause brain damage, but pushing yourself to walk or jog with a high temperature is a terrible idea. Rest up completely, and only resume light walks once your doctor gives you the green light.

Even though people say brain damage from fever is rare, you should never take any chances with a high temperature. It is always safer to visit a clinic or hospital to get a proper diagnosis rather than trying to manage a severe fever at home. Better safe than sorry!

Trust me, if high fevers caused brain damage, half of my friends would be in big trouble by now! Jokes aside, your brain is pretty tough and a standard fever won't fry it. Just keep taking your meds as prescribed, drink lots of water, and chill out.

Oh god, I always overthink these things too and end up scrolling through medical forums at 3 AM. From what I’ve read to calm myself down, a normal fever won't cause brain damage at all, so please try not to panic. But if the temperature is rising rapidly, do contact a doctor right away just so you can sleep peacefully.

Hey, don't worry too much. A normal high fever from a common cold or flu is just your body's immune system fighting back, and it won't damage the brain. Brain damage only becomes a concern if the temperature crosses a highly dangerous threshold like 107°F, which is very rare. Just do cool water sponging and consult your doc if it's persistent.

I totally get it, seeing a high temperature can make your mind jump to the worst possible scenarios. Please take a deep breath; your brain is well protected and a typical high fever won't cause any damage. Just focus on resting and staying hydrated, and consult a doctor to help ease your mind.

I can't give you any medical facts, but I remember having a massive 104-degree fever during a bad bout of typhoid a few years ago. I was completely delirious and terrified, but once the fever came down, I was totally fine with no lasting issues. If you are really worried, it's always best to call up your doctor.

I totally understand how scary it feels when the thermometer shows a really high reading. But don't worry, a standard fever is just your body fighting the bugs and won't hurt your brain. Keep wiping your forehead with a damp cloth to feel comfortable and make sure to take your doctor's advice.

At my age, every minor ache feels like a major crisis, so I get the worry. But honestly, a simple high fever isn't going to cause brain damage, so you can tick that off your anxiety list. Just take some rest, let your family pamper you for a change, and see a doctor if the fever refuses to budge.
