Are heart palpitations in pregnancy normal?

In my second trimester, I sometimes feel my heart fluttering or beating faster than usual. It's a bit unsettling. Is it normal to experience heart palpitations during pregnancy, or should I be concerned and talk to my doctor?

My wife experienced palpitations during her pregnancy, and our doctor told us that increased blood volume makes the heart work much harder. If you have gestational diabetes, it is also important to monitor your sugar levels carefully as fluctuations can cause a fast heartbeat.

Sometimes a heavy, spicy meal or too much tea to satisfy those pregnancy cravings can trigger a racing heart! Try eating smaller, lighter meals throughout the day to see if that helps, but definitely mention it to your gynecologist.

While palpitations are quite common due to hormonal changes, it's practical to mention it during your routine antenatal visits. Most basic blood tests and thyroid panels are part of the standard pregnancy packages anyway, so check with your clinic.

I read that cardiac output increases by almost 30 to 50 percent during pregnancy, which often leads to benign palpitations. My doctor specifically advised that while mild fluttering is common, any accompanying dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath needs immediate medical evaluation.

I know exactly how terrifying it feels when your heart suddenly starts pounding, especially when you are carrying a baby. It is completely natural to feel anxious about it, but most of the time it is just normal pregnancy changes. Do discuss it with your doctor to ease your mind.

I was looking this up for my sister recently. It turns out the body goes through massive circulatory changes during pregnancy, which makes occasional palpitations fairly common. Still, it is always a good idea to bring it up at the next doctor's appointment.

Lying down on your left side and drinking a cool glass of water can help calm the heart rate naturally. However, if you feel any chest pain, breathlessness, or if you feel faint, you must see your doctor immediately without relying on home tips.
