Why my newborn won't sleep?
My newborn is only a few weeks old, but it feels like he hardly sleeps. He's constantly fussy or awake, even after feeding. Is this normal for a newborn or am I doing something wrong?
My newborn is only a few weeks old, but it feels like he hardly sleeps. He's constantly fussy or awake, even after feeding. Is this normal for a newborn or am I doing something wrong?
This is something I've been researching a lot because I plan to have a baby soon. From what I've read, newborns often don't have a developed sleep-wake cycle yet, and they can be overtired, hungry, have gas, or just need to be comforted. It sounds like a lot for new parents!
When my first child was born, I thought something was seriously wrong because he barely slept. I was so stressed! But then the doctor reassured me that it's completely normal for newborns to have irregular sleep patterns. They're still adjusting to the world. Just keep an eye on their feeding and diaper changes, and try to rest when they do.
Oh, beta, all new mothers go through this! Newborns sleep very little and wake up often because their tummies are small and they get hungry quickly. And sometimes they just want to be held. It's a phase, it will pass. Just be patient and rest when the baby rests.
Girl, I just came out of that phase! My newborn wouldn't sleep for more than 2 hours straight. It was brutal! It turned out she had some gas issues and also was going through a growth spurt. We started doing bicycle kicks and white noise, and it helped eventually. Hang in there!
My pediatrician explained that newborns have very disorganized sleep cycles and often mix up day and night. Their feeding demands are also very high, waking them frequently. Factors like hunger, discomfort (gas, wet diaper), being too hot or cold, or even overstimulation can prevent them from settling down. It's crucial to create a consistent, calming sleep environment.

It's completely normal, don't worry too much! Newborns don't know the difference between day and night yet. They have tiny stomachs, so they wake up for feeds. Also, gas or feeling too hot/cold can keep them up. Just focus on a calm environment and lots of cuddles.
While I focus on my own health, newborn sleep is a separate challenge. But often, it's about their discomfort. Is their diaper wet? Are they hungry? Do they have gas? Sometimes a little burping helps. It's a process of elimination and patience. Keep a diary, maybe it will show a pattern.
