Why might a person have mistrust in mental health services?

I've noticed a lot of people, even in my family, seem hesitant to seek professional help for mental health issues. There's a big mistrust. What could be the reasons behind people having such mistrust in mental health services?

Honestly, I struggled to trust mental health services initially too. There's a huge stigma in our society about admitting you need help, and fear of being judged or misunderstood. Plus, some people have had bad experiences with therapists who weren't a good fit or felt like they weren't heard. It's a very personal journey, and trust takes time to build, especially when you're feeling vulnerable.

Many people have a strong belief in home remedies or spiritual healers for all kinds of problems, including mental distress. They might feel that modern mental health services are too focused on medicines or don't understand their cultural context. Also, there's a big stigma attached to it, making people hesitant. But for serious issues, always consult a qualified doctor or therapist, home remedies have limits.

Beta, in our culture, we often rely on family and community for support, not outside professionals, for mind-related troubles. People also worry about 'log kya kahenge' (what will people say) if they seek help for their mind. Plus, there's a fear of being labeled or having to take strong medicines. These are deep-rooted beliefs that create a lot of mistrust in formal mental health services.

Well, for me, managing my diabetes and its impact on my mood is already a challenge. I've heard stories where mental health professionals don't fully understand how physical health conditions interact with mental health. People worry if their symptoms will be dismissed or if they'll just be given pills without addressing the root cause. This lack of integrated care can lead to mistrust.

From a practical standpoint, the cost of therapy and medication can be a huge barrier. Also, finding a good, reliable therapist who understands your context and is available at convenient times is tough. There's also the fear that it might affect your career prospects if an employer finds out. These are realistic concerns that lead to mistrust or hesitation.
