Why is tb vaccine not used in the us?

I was discussing different vaccination schedules with a friend who lives in the US. She mentioned they don't use the TB vaccine (BCG) there, which we commonly get here in India. Why is the TB vaccine not used in the United States?

Achha, ye baat hai. From what I understand, the US doesn't use the BCG vaccine universally because it's not very effective against adult pulmonary TB, which is the most common and contagious type. Plus, it can make TB diagnostic tests (like the skin test) difficult to interpret, which is not practical for their screening programs.

That's an interesting question. The main reason is that the BCG vaccine isn't fully effective in adults, especially against lung TB, and it also interferes with the common TB skin test used for diagnosis. Since TB isn't as widespread in the US as it is in some other countries, they prefer to rely on testing and treatment rather than universal vaccination. It's a different strategy.

Oh, that's a bit confusing, isn't it? If there's a vaccine, why not use it everywhere? I think it's because it affects how they test for it later, and maybe they have fewer cases, so they focus on finding and treating active cases instead. It just shows how different countries have different health challenges and solutions.

Hmm, I heard something about this. The vaccine makes it hard to detect TB with the usual tests, so they avoid it. Like, for BP, they have clear guidelines. For TB, they chose a different approach. It's all about what works best for their specific health situation, I guess.

Many people ask this question. The US has a relatively low incidence of TB, so they prioritize early diagnosis and treatment over mass vaccination. The BCG vaccine isn't 100% effective, especially against lung forms of TB in adults, and it complicates the results of the tuberculin skin test, which is a primary screening tool there. So it's a strategic decision based on their epidemiology.

I think it's because the BCG vaccine doesn't prevent all forms of TB and can actually interfere with the common skin tests for TB, making it harder to diagnose. Similar to how with thyroid issues, regular, specific tests are crucial; they have a very targeted approach for TB diagnostics there rather than broad vaccination.
