Why is bicarbonate low in diabetic ketoacidosis?

My neighbour's son was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, and I heard the doctor mentioning something about low bicarbonate levels. I'm trying to understand, why would bicarbonate be low in a condition like DKA?

I totally get why this can be confusing, it's a pretty complex medical concept. In diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), your body produces too many ketones, which are acidic. Bicarbonate is like your body's natural buffer, trying to neutralize these acids. But when there's an overwhelming amount of acid from ketones, the bicarbonate gets used up trying to balance it out, hence its levels drop. It's the body trying to fight the acidity.

Okay, quick answer: in DKA, your body makes too much acid (ketones). Bicarbonate's job is to neutralize acid. So, when there's excess acid, bicarbonate gets used up trying to compensate, making its levels low. This means the body is in an acidotic state. If you suspect DKA, don't wait, get immediate medical help; it's an emergency.

Haan, ye thoda technical hai but simple bhasha mein, jab DKA hota hai, toh body mein acids badh jaate hain. Bicarbonate un acids ko control karta hai, toh jab acids bahut zyada hote hain, bicarbonate unko balance karte-karte kam ho jaata hai, na? Isliye low hota hai. But DKA is very serious, doctor ko immediately consult karna chahiye.

So basically, DKA makes your blood super acidic because of ketones. Bicarbonate is what your body uses to neutralize that acid. If there's too much acid, the bicarbonate gets used up trying to fight it, so its levels drop. It's a sign your body's in trouble, needs urgent medical attention.

Okay, so imagine bicarbonate is like a sponge for acid in your body. In diabetic ketoacidosis, your body is producing a lot of acid because of messed-up sugar metabolism. This 'acid sponge' (bicarbonate) works really hard to soak up all that extra acid, but eventually, it gets used up and its levels drop. This means your body is becoming very acidic. It's a serious condition, so if anyone feels symptoms, they should go to the hospital right away!
