Why is armour thyroid not recommended?

My friend in the US was telling me about something called Armour Thyroid for her condition. I have thyroid issues too, but my Indian doctor always prescribes other meds. Just curious, why is Armour Thyroid generally not recommended here or seen as not ideal?

I remember my aunt had thyroid issues and was given something similar and she panicked. But actually, synthetic thyroid hormones like Levothyroxine are generally preferred because they provide a consistent, measurable dose of T4. Natural desiccated thyroid like Armour can have variable hormone levels, making it harder to regulate. It's about consistency, not that it's 'bad'.

Look, with Armour Thyroid, the issue is often inconsistent potency and ratio of T3 to T4 hormones. This makes it difficult for doctors to fine-tune dosage and achieve stable thyroid levels. Most endocrinologists in India and globally prefer synthetic T4 because it's predictable and allows for better patient management. Simple.

Namaste! From what I understand, Armour Thyroid, which is a natural desiccated thyroid hormone, contains both T3 and T4 hormones, but their ratio can vary batch-to-batch. Doctors generally prefer synthetic T4 (like Levothyroxine) because it's precise and easier to dose accurately. This ensures stable hormone levels, which is crucial for managing thyroid conditions. Always follow your endocrinologist's advice!

My doctor explained that for conditions like thyroid, especially when you have other health concerns like high BP, it's vital to have predictable medication. Armour Thyroid's natural variability can complicate managing hormone levels, potentially affecting other aspects of your health. That's why precise synthetic options are often recommended, alongside regular checkups and a healthy lifestyle.

For managing conditions like diabetes or thyroid, consistency is paramount. Armour Thyroid, being a natural product, can have variations in its hormone content, which makes stable management difficult. Just like with diabetes, where consistent blood sugar levels are key, with thyroid, consistent hormone levels are essential. Synthetic options offer that precision, so doctors usually prefer them.
