Why does my breast pain before periods?

Every month, about a week before my period, my breasts become really sore and tender. It’s quite uncomfortable, especially when I move. Is this a common pre-period symptom?

Oh, my god, I used to panic so much about this! Every month I'd google 'breast pain before period' and convince myself it was something serious. But my gynae said it's totally normal, just hormonal changes making your breasts tender. It's called cyclical breast pain. So don't worry too much!

Breast pain before periods is very common, usually due to hormonal fluctuations (estrogen and progesterone). It's a normal part of PMS. To manage, try supportive bras, reduce caffeine, and some find evening primrose oil helpful. If it's severe or atypical, consult your OB/GYN for peace of mind.

It's so uncomfortable, isn't it? That tenderness and soreness can really affect your mood and make you feel generally irritable. It's okay to feel frustrated by it. Just know that many women go through this, and it's a very common part of the menstrual cycle.

My doctor explained that this is called cyclical mastalgia, and it's caused by the fluctuating hormone levels, specifically estrogen and progesterone, leading up to your period. These hormones can cause fluid retention and swelling in the breast tissue, making them feel tender and painful. She suggested wearing a good supportive bra and reducing caffeine.

While pre-period breast pain is often normal, any unusual or persistent breast pain should always be checked by a doctor. I once thought a new ache was normal, but it was something else. It's best to be vigilant with breast health. Please consult your doctor for a proper evaluation.
