Why do we require sleep?

My work hours are a bit crazy these days and I often cut down on sleep. I was wondering, fundamentally, why do we require sleep? What's the main function it serves?

Hey! We totally require sleep because our bodies are not machines, you know? Don't stress too much about the details, but just know it's when your brain and body basically hit the 'reset' button. Without it, everything feels wrong!

My doctor explained that sleep is not just rest; it's an active process where our bodies repair tissues, synthesize hormones, and our brains consolidate memories and process emotions. It's crucial for immune function, cognitive performance, and overall physical health. Without it, our body literally breaks down.

I used to struggle with sleep so much, tried everything from warm milk to meditation. But honestly, it's because our body truly needs that downtime. It's not a luxury, it's a necessity for healing, thinking clearly, and keeping your mood stable. Don't ignore it.

We require sleep just as much as we require a balanced diet. It's the time our body recovers and rebuilds. Just like good food provides nutrients, good sleep allows your cells to repair and your mind to process. Both are foundational for energy and well-being.
