Why do newborns sleep with their arms up?

We noticed our newborn often sleeps with his arms raised up, almost like a 'W' shape. My grandmother says it means he's comfortable, but I wanted to know the actual reason. Is this a common thing for newborns?

My younger brother slept like that, looked like he was surrendering in his sleep, lol. My mom said it's just how babies sleep naturally. Nothing weird, just comfortable for them.

Oh, my baby used to do this all the time! It's so cute. The doctor told me it's called the 'Moro reflex' or startle reflex, and it's a very natural position for them. It helps them feel safe, apparently. They outgrow it soon enough!

I totally get why you'd ask this, it looks a bit unusual, right? But it's actually their natural 'startle reflex' position, also called the 'Moro reflex'. Their body just naturally settles like that. It's completely normal and healthy.

This arm-up position is very common and normal for newborns, often linked to the Moro reflex. It's not something to worry about. Focus on ensuring safe sleep practices like back sleeping and a clear crib. It's part of their development.
