Why do newborns sleep so much?

Our new baby sleeps for what feels like 16-18 hours a day, sometimes even more! My mother says it's normal, but it still makes me a little worried. Why do newborns sleep so much?

Newborns need a lot of sleep for their growth, their bodies are working overtime. Just like us adults, we need proper rest to keep our BP in check, they need it even more for development. Regular checkups for them are key, always.

Newborns sleeping a lot is completely normal because their brains and bodies are developing incredibly fast. Don't listen to any strange 'remedies' online about this. Always confirm with your pediatrician; they'll tell you what's healthy and normal for your baby's age.

Oh my god, newborns are basically tiny sleep machines! It's because they're growing so rapidly and their brains are doing so much development. All that learning and growing uses up a lot of energy. Just make sure they're waking up to feed enough!

While it's normal for newborns to sleep a lot, sometimes excessive lethargy can be a sign of something else. As a cautious person, I'd always recommend mentioning it to your pediatrician during their next checkup, just to be on the safe side, especially if they're difficult to wake for feeds.

Haan, it feels like they sleep forever, doesn't it? My older one slept a lot too. It's mainly because their bodies are growing so much. Just make sure they're feeding well when they're awake. If you feel like they're too drowsy or not feeding, definitely ask your doctor.

I used to constantly check if my baby was still breathing because they slept so much and so deeply! But yes, it's absolutely crucial for their development. Just make sure their feeding schedule is okay and they're gaining weight, and try not to worry too much about the sleep part.
