Why do my shoulders ache when i sleep?

For the past few weeks, my shoulders ache quite a bit when I sleep, especially if I lie on my side. It sometimes wakes me up. What could be causing this discomfort at night?

I literally just got over this! My shoulders were killing me every morning. Turns out my old pillow was too flat, and I was sleeping on my side with my arm tucked in a weird way. I got a new orthopedic pillow and started consciously sleeping on my back or other side. It made a huge difference. You might be having a similar issue.

My doctor explained that morning shoulder pain is very common and often stems from poor sleeping posture, an unsupportive mattress/pillow, or underlying issues like rotator cuff tendonitis or bursitis. They suggested evaluating my sleep setup and trying targeted stretches. If it persists, an MRI might be needed to check for structural damage.

Maybe your shoulders are just tired from carrying all your good intentions to eat healthy, but then you end up having biryani, haha! Seriously though, sometimes muscle stiffness is just that. A warm bath and a good night's rest (in a comfy position!) can do wonders. If not, maybe ask your doctor for a 'no pain' recipe!

Don't make my mistake and ignore consistent shoulder pain. I thought it was just from work, but it got worse and was diagnosed as impingement syndrome. Early intervention could have saved me a lot of discomfort and lengthy physio. Get it checked by a specialist, seriously.

I used to panic thinking I had some serious shoulder injury because it hurt so much in the mornings! But my physio just told me it was my sleeping posture and tight desk muscles. Once I corrected my posture and did some exercises, it got much better. Don't worry, it's often fixable, but do consult a specialist.

This happens to me sometimes too, but usually only on one side! Is it only because of how I'm lying down, or can stress also make your shoulders ache at night? What kind of pillow is best for shoulder pain?

Most likely, it's your sleeping position or a worn-out pillow. Try supporting your neck and head properly with a good quality pillow. If you're a side sleeper, put a pillow between your knees to align your spine better, which can sometimes help with shoulder alignment too. Simple adjustments can save you from pain.

General body aches, including shoulder pain, can be exacerbated by inflammatory conditions often seen with uncontrolled diabetes. Ensuring your blood sugar levels are stable is very important. Also, for me, if I sleep in a cold room, the aches are worse. Keep an eye on your sugar and mention this to your doctor.

If it's persistent, definitely consult an orthopedic specialist, especially if it's affecting your sleep quality. At a good hospital, they'll check for impingement, rotator cuff issues, or bursitis. Ask them clearly about your sleeping position and whether it contributes, and what type of pillow they recommend specifically for your condition.

Often, it's just due to sleeping in an awkward position or an old, unsupportive pillow. Try using a firmer pillow or sleeping on your back. Gentle shoulder rotations and warm compresses before bed can also help. But if the pain is severe, constant, or limiting your movement, please see a doctor immediately.
