Why do elderly people sleep so much?

My father, who is 75, seems to be sleeping a lot these days, even during the daytime. We're a bit concerned about it. Why do elderly people sleep so much?

My nani also sleeps a lot during the day, and sometimes wakes up at night. I think it's because their sleep patterns change as they get older, like they get less deep sleep at night, so they feel tired during the day. Also, any health issues or medications can affect their sleep. It's good to ensure they get enough rest.

Bro, my grandparents literally nap every few hours. I think it's just how it works when you get old. Their bodies probably need more rest to recover, and their sleep cycles get all messed up. Also, sometimes meds make them sleepy. My dadi always says 'umar ho gayi hai ab, beta'.

While older adults do need a certain amount of sleep, it's not always 'more' sleep but different sleep patterns. They might have fragmented sleep at night, leading to daytime napping. Gentle daily activity, like a short walk, can help regulate their sleep-wake cycle, but always ensure they're comfortable and it's doctor-approved.

My mother sleeps a lot too, sometimes it worries me. Doctors explained that as you age, the sleep architecture changes; deep sleep reduces. Plus, various health conditions like diabetes, heart issues, or even medications can make them feel more tired and sleep more during the day. We just make sure she's comfortable and her health is monitored.

While thyroid issues can cause fatigue and excessive sleepiness, it's also common for elderly people to have altered sleep patterns. They often get less quality sleep at night and compensate with naps during the day. It's always a good idea to ensure their thyroid levels are normal, along with other health check-ups, to rule out medical causes for increased sleepiness.

This is a very common observation. Elderly people often sleep more during the day because their nighttime sleep tends to be lighter and more fragmented. Many factors contribute: changes in circadian rhythm, underlying health conditions, medications, and sometimes even less physical activity. It's important to differentiate between normal age-related changes and excessive sleepiness due to medical issues, so good to check with a doctor if concerned.
