Why do diabetic people need sugar?

My mother has type 2 diabetes. Sometimes if her sugar drops too low, she has to quickly eat something sweet. It seems counterintuitive for a diabetic to need sugar. Why do diabetic people need sugar in certain situations?

Okay, so this is important! It's not that they *always* need sugar, but if their blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), like after taking too much medicine or not eating enough, they need a quick source of sugar to raise it back up fast. My nani always keeps glucose biscuits handy for this.

This is a very specific situation. Diabetics need sugar only when they are experiencing a 'hypo' or low blood sugar. It's not a general need. Never assume or give sugar without confirming with a doctor or understanding the situation. Self-treating can be dangerous, always verify with a medical professional.

Hah! I wish it was a free pass to eat all the sweets! No, no. Only when their blood sugar drops *too low*, which is dangerous. Then, they need a quick sugar fix. Otherwise, it's back to monitoring and avoiding. It's a very specific, emergency situation, not a regular craving. My life is a constant negotiation with food, trust me.

It's for emergencies, not for regular consumption. If their blood sugar dips too low, which can happen with medication or if they miss a meal, they need a quick source of sugar to bring it back up. My relative keeps glucose tablets or a sweet drink for this exact reason. It's a lifesaver in those moments.

Ho na, this is a very important point! Diabetic people need sugar *only* when their blood sugar goes too low, which is called hypoglycemia. It can be very dangerous. So they carry things like a small juice box or glucose tablets to quickly bring their sugar levels up. Otherwise, normal days, they avoid it.

Diabetic individuals need sugar only in cases of hypoglycemia, which is dangerously low blood sugar. This can occur if they take too much insulin or medication, or miss meals. A quick source of glucose is essential to rapidly normalize levels. It's a critical emergency measure, not a dietary recommendation for regular intake.
