Why do depressed people sleep so much?

I've been feeling very low lately and all I want to do is sleep. My friends say it's a sign of depression. Why do depressed people tend to sleep so much, sometimes even oversleeping?

Depression can really mess with the body's entire system. It's not just mental; it affects hormones and energy levels. Some people with depression experience hypersomnia, sleeping excessively. It's important to differentiate this from general fatigue, and of course, diet (especially sugar intake for me) and routine play a role in energy, but this is a deeper issue. Needs proper medical guidance.

Depression profoundly impacts the brain's neurochemicals, which regulate sleep and energy. It can lead to hypersomnia, where people sleep much more than usual. Physical activity, even just light walking, can sometimes help regulate sleep cycles and boost mood, but it's crucial to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Yeah, been there. When you're depressed, your brain is just constantly overwhelmed and trying to process a lot, even if you don't feel like it. It's exhausting. Plus, sleep can feel like an escape from everything, so you just want to stay there. It's a heavy feeling.

My son went through a phase like this. The doctor explained that depression drains so much mental and emotional energy that the body just seeks escape and rest. It's a symptom, not just laziness. We made sure he had a quiet, comfortable space and encouraged small, consistent steps towards a routine, but professional help was vital.

This really worries me because it shows how deep depression can go. It's not just feeling sad; it literally impacts physical functions like sleep. Some brains react by oversleeping, feeling constantly drained. It's the body's way of trying to cope with the immense emotional and mental fatigue. They need gentle support and definitely professional help.
