When to get iv fluids for vomiting?

My son has been vomiting a lot since morning, and I'm worried he might get dehydrated. When is it necessary to take him to the doctor for IV fluids for vomiting? Should I wait it out or go immediately?

Namaskaram. My family always says to try rice water or tender coconut water first for mild dehydration. But if the vomiting is severe and you can't keep anything down for many hours, or if you feel very weak and dizzy, then it's time to see a doctor quickly. IV fluids are for when your body really needs that quick hydration boost, and only a doctor can decide that.

As someone who stays active, I know how easily dehydration can set in, especially with vomiting. If you can't even hold down sips of water or ORS for several hours, and you start feeling really lightheaded or your urine output decreases significantly, that's a red flag. Time to hit the hospital and get IV fluids. Don't push through severe dehydration.

If you're vomiting frequently and can't keep any liquids down for, say, 8-12 hours, you're looking at dehydration. Don't wait until you're completely drained. Especially if you feel dizzy or have severe weakness, it's better to get to a doctor or hospital for IV fluids. Timely intervention saves a lot of hassle and discomfort.

I had a bad bout of food poisoning last month, vomiting non-stop. After about 10 hours, I felt so weak I couldn't even stand. My family took me to the emergency room and they put me on IV fluids right away. It helped a lot, felt better in a few hours. Don't wait that long if you're feeling really bad.

Generally, if you're vomiting constantly and cannot keep any fluids down for over 6-8 hours, or if you develop signs of severe dehydration like dry mouth, no urination, extreme dizziness, or confusion, you should seek medical attention. IV fluids are necessary then to quickly rehydrate and replace electrolytes. It's a medical call.

Oh god, just the thought of vomiting makes me anxious. How do you know for sure if it's bad enough for IV fluids? I always worry I'm overreacting, but then what if I'm not? Has anyone else felt confused about when to seek help for severe vomiting?

Hello! Vomiting can be really draining. If you've been throwing up so much that you can't even sip water for a good few hours, and you feel very faint or have severe muscle cramps, that's when you should definitely go to the doctor for IV fluids. It prevents you from getting dangerously dehydrated. Always better to be safe.

Oh, I didn't realize vomiting could get so serious that you'd need IV fluids. How do you know when it's really time to go to the hospital for it? Is there a specific number of times you vomit, or just when you feel very weak?

Bhai/Behen, if you're throwing up so much that you can't even drink water, or if you feel like you're about to faint, then don't be a hero. Go to the hospital, get those IV fluids. Dehydration is serious, especially in our climate. Don't delay.

From a dietary perspective, when you're vomiting a lot, your body loses electrolytes and nutrients quickly. If you can't tolerate even small sips of ORS or clear broth, and you feel profoundly weak, IV fluids are needed. It's about preventing severe electrolyte imbalance and organ stress. Don't just try home remedies if it's severe.
