When is back pain an emergency?

My husband has been having severe lower back pain for the past two days, and he also feels some tingling in his leg. Should we consult a doctor or is it something that can wait? When does back pain become an emergency situation?

Back pain can sometimes be tricky. For someone like me with thyroid issues, I'm always cautious. It's an emergency if it comes with sudden loss of bladder/bowel control, severe weakness in legs, or if you have a high fever with chills. Any new, severe pain, especially if it doesn't respond to usual pain relief, needs a doctor's visit and maybe some tests.

I just recovered from severe back pain. My doctor said it's an emergency if you suddenly lose control of your bladder or bowels, or if you get weakness/numbness in your legs. Also, if the pain is so bad it came after a fall, or if you have fever with it. Don't wait for these things, go to the hospital.

For someone with diabetes, any new or severe pain, especially back pain, needs careful attention. It's an emergency if you also experience numbness, weakness in your legs, loss of bladder/bowel control, or if there's a fever. Don't ignore these signs, as complications can be more serious for us. Get it checked by your doctor quickly.

Back pain is an emergency if you experience sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling in your legs or groin area. Also, if you lose bladder or bowel control, or if the pain is accompanied by a high fever or unexplained weight loss. Get to the ER immediately if any of these occur.

Back pain is an emergency if you have numbness, weakness in legs, loss of bladder/bowel control, or fever. See a doctor right away if these happen.

I get back pain sometimes after sitting too long, but it usually goes away. So, only if it's like, really sudden and severe, or if I can't feel my legs? What if it's just very sharp but no other symptoms?

Forget all the home remedies people suggest for severe back pain. If you have sudden numbness, weakness in your legs, can't control your toilet functions, or have a fever with the pain, that's a medical emergency. Don't trust random internet advice then; verify these symptoms with an actual doctor immediately.

When your back pain makes you question if you can even make it to the fridge for water, that's bad. But when it's so bad you can't feel your legs or suddenly can't hold your pee, then it's time to call 108, not me for a joke! 😂 Seriously, those are emergency signs.

Bete, sometimes back pain comes from bad posture, for that some warm oil massage and rest helps. But if the pain is very severe, or if your legs feel numb, or if you suddenly can't control your washroom urges, or you have a high fever with it, then it is very serious. Go to the hospital without delay. That's not something for home remedies.

Back pain can be so debilitating, I completely understand the worry. It becomes an emergency if you experience sudden numbness or weakness in your legs, or if you lose control of your bladder or bowels. Also, if the pain is due to a recent injury or fall, or is accompanied by a high fever, please seek immediate medical attention. Don't try to just 'push through' these specific symptoms.
