When does active sleep end?

My wife complains I thrash around a lot in my sleep. I've heard of active sleep in babies, but what about adults? When does active sleep end, or does it just change as we get older?

Active sleep, or REM sleep, doesn't really 'end' in adults, it's a part of the normal sleep cycle. Babies have more of it, but adults still have it. Don't fall for any strange internet remedies promising to 'end' it. If you have sleep issues, a doctor is the best person to consult.

Oh, active sleep for babies means they are dreaming, no? It's natural. As children grow older, their sleep changes, and they have less active sleep compared to when they are small babies. It's just a part of growing up.

Active sleep, or REM sleep, is a normal and necessary stage of sleep for everyone, from babies to adults. It doesn't exactly 'end' but its proportion changes as we grow. For babies, it's a very big part of their sleep, which is why they twitch and move so much while sleeping. Don't worry about it ending, it just evolves.

My paediatrician explained that 'active sleep' is essentially REM sleep, which is very prominent in infants. It doesn't 'end' but rather the sleep architecture matures. Infants spend about 50% of their sleep in REM, which decreases to around 20-25% by adulthood. It's a developmental change, not something that stops entirely.

Ha! Active sleep for me ends when my alarm rings at 6 AM, usually after I've spent half the night 'actively' trying to find a comfortable position. Seriously though, it's more about how much of it you get, especially if you're not a baby anymore. Wish I had more, boss.

In our yogic traditions, we understand sleep as a cycle with different phases. Active sleep, or the dream state, is a part of this natural cycle for healing and processing. It does not truly end but rather the proportion and intensity of these cycles shift as a person matures, allowing for deeper, more restorative rest in other phases.

From what I understand, active sleep is just REM sleep, which is important for brain development, especially in babies. It doesn't really stop, it just changes in how much time we spend in it as we get older. If you're concerned about sleep patterns, maybe track it for a bit or talk to a sleep expert.
