When do babies stop grunting in their sleep?

My newborn grunts a lot in his sleep, and sometimes it sounds like he's straining. My mother-in-law says it's normal but I'm still a bit concerned. When do babies typically stop grunting in their sleep?

Hello! Newborns often grunt a lot in their sleep, especially during the first few weeks, as their digestive system is maturing and they learn to pass gas or stool. It usually reduces significantly by 2-3 months of age as they become more efficient. If you're concerned, do check with your doctor.

Grunting in sleep can be normal for newborns but if it's accompanied by discomfort, difficulty breathing, or seems excessive, please don't just ask online. A paediatrician can properly assess if it's normal or if something needs attention. Always verify with a doctor.

My nephew used to grunt like a little piglet in his sleep, it was actually funny! His mom said it stopped around 3 months or so. She was told it's normal as they're figuring out how to poop and pass gas.

Newborns often have a lot of sounds during sleep. This grunting is very common as their bodies are still developing. It usually subsides by the time they are a few months old. Creating a calm and quiet environment for them can help facilitate peaceful sleep.

Sometimes grunting can be due to gas. For breastfeeding mothers, a careful diet might help reduce baby's discomfort. If it's formula-fed, perhaps the type of formula needs checking with a doctor. Generally, it gets better by 3-4 months as their digestion improves.
