When did chemotherapy for cancer start?

A friend's father is undergoing chemotherapy and it's quite intense. I was wondering about its history. When did doctors actually start using chemotherapy to treat cancer patients? Was it a long time ago or more recent?

Haan, chemical treatments ki baat kar rahe ho na? Mujhe lagta hai post-WWII period mein kuch develop hua tha. I'm not sure of the exact year, but it's been around for quite some time now.

Chemotherapy as we know it largely developed post-World War II, stemming from the use of mustard gas. The first effective drugs emerged in the late 1940s and 50s. It's a complex history, but that's the general timeline.

Oh, that's a serious medical question! I guess it must be quite old, like decades back. My mind is more on what to eat for dinner, hehe. But seriously, it's good that medical science keeps advancing.

Goodness, all these medical questions! I just remember my mother-in-law talking about someone who had cancer getting some strong medicine way back. I guess it's been a long time. Just hoping for easier treatments in the future, my back is already tired from just thinking about it.

Oh, I'm not really sure about the exact start date. I always thought it was a very modern treatment. So, has it changed a lot since it first started? Like, is it less harsh now?
