What type of diabetes requires insulin?

My uncle was just diagnosed with diabetes, and the doctor immediately put him on insulin. I thought insulin was for very severe cases. Is there a specific type of diabetes that always requires insulin from the beginning?

Hello, from what I understand, Type 1 diabetes definitely requires insulin because the body doesn't produce it at all. For Type 2, my uncle started with pills but later had to switch to insulin when his sugar levels were too high. It's always best to follow your doctor's advice carefully.

Usually Type 1 diabetes needs insulin right from the start as the body can't make it. In Type 2, diet and exercise can sometimes control it, but if that's not enough, insulin may be prescribed. Eating balanced meals is so important for both types.

Most commonly, Type 1 diabetes patients require insulin because their pancreas doesn't produce insulin at all. For Type 2 diabetes, insulin might be needed if other treatments like oral medications and lifestyle changes aren't effective in controlling blood glucose levels over time. It’s a doctor’s decision based on individual conditions.

Initially, when my sugar was high, I panicked thinking I'd need insulin. But my doctor said Type 1 always needs it. For Type 2, it's often managed with medicines and diet first, and only if that doesn't work, then insulin. Don't worry, just talk to your doctor.
