What to say when calling in sick for mental health?

I'm having a really bad mental health day and need to call in sick for work tomorrow. I'm not sure how much detail to give or what exactly to say to my manager. Any advice on how to phrase it professionally?

Oh, this is always so tricky! I'd probably overthink it for hours. But I think just a simple 'I won't be able to come to work today as I'm unwell. I'll keep you updated on my return.' is best. You don't need to overshare. Your mental health is as valid as physical, so treat it like any other sickness. Hope you feel better soon!

It is important to be truthful to yourself and your employer, but no need to reveal every detail. Simply state 'I need to take a sick day for personal health reasons today and will be unavailable.' Take this time for introspection and self-care. May peace return to your mind.

It's completely valid to need a mental health day. Don't feel guilty. Just say, 'I need to take a sick day today due to health reasons and won't be able to come in.' You don't owe them a detailed explanation beyond that. Your well-being comes first, and taking this time is a brave step.

Oh man, sometimes my brain just decides it's had enough, haha. Just tell them 'I'm not feeling well enough to work today and need to take a sick day.' You don't have to specify 'mental health.' It's a sick day, period. Now go get some proper rest, both mind and body!

Sometimes you just need a day to recharge, right? I'd say, 'I'm not feeling well and need to take a sick day to recover.' No need to over-explain. And then, maybe treat yourself to some comforting food and just relax. A good meal can do wonders for the soul!
