What to say to someone with cancer?

A close colleague at work just confided that they have cancer, and I was quite shocked. I want to offer my support, but I'm not sure how to approach the topic or what words would be most helpful. Any suggestions?

Just say, 'Yaar, this is tough, but I'm here for you. Anything you need, small or big, just tell me.' And then actually offer specific help, like 'Can I bring dinner?' or 'Want a ride?' Don't just say 'let me know,' because they probably won't.

Having gone through something similar, I know how isolating it can feel. Tell them, 'This is a rough road, but you're strong, and I'm here to support you at every step.' Offer specific practical help, like 'I can help with meals' or 'I'll take care of errands on Tuesdays.' Small, consistent acts of kindness mean the world.

I can't give medical advice, but when a friend had cancer, I just told them 'I'm thinking of you, and I'm here to listen or just hang out, no pressure.' And I made sure to check in regularly without being overwhelming. Sometimes just a text saying 'Hi' means a lot.

To someone with cancer, a genuine 'I'm so sorry you're going through this, and I'm here for you' is truly powerful. Offer concrete support: 'Can I help with groceries?' or 'Would you like some company?' Listen more than you speak, and let them guide the conversation. Your consistent presence is what matters.

Just hold their hand, if you can, and tell them 'I love you, and I'm here.' Sometimes, silent presence is more comforting than many words. Let them know you care.
