What to say to someone struggling with mental health?

My college roommate has been going through a really tough time mentally lately, and I'm worried about him. I want to reach out and help, but I'm not sure how to start the conversation or what to say without making things worse. Any advice on how to talk to him?

It's so important to approach this with care. Just say 'I'm here for you, no judgment, just support.' Offer to help them find a professional, or just be a listening ear. Mental health is serious, just like physical health; we need to talk about it openly and get proper help, just like we would for high BP.

It's okay to not be okay, seriously. Tell them that their feelings are valid and it's brave to talk about it. When I was really stressed, I thought I was losing it, but it turned out to be normal anxiety. Reassure them that help is available and things can get better.

The best thing you can say is 'I'm listening, and you're not alone.' Offer practical help if they need it, like finding a therapist or accompanying them to an appointment. Avoid saying things like 'just cheer up' or 'it's all in your head.' Empathy and support are crucial.

Beta, times are different now, mental health is a real concern. Tell them, 'You are strong for reaching out, and I am here to walk with you through this.' Remind them that even tough times pass, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Just be there, truly present.

Focus on validating their feelings and offering concrete support. Say, 'It sounds like you're going through a lot, and I'm really sorry to hear that. How can I best support you right now?' or 'Have you thought about speaking with a therapist? I can help you look for one.' Don't try to fix them, just support their journey to getting professional help.
