What to say to someone diagnosed with cancer?

A distant relative just got diagnosed with cancer, and my family is going to visit them soon. I want to offer my support, but I'm not sure what to say that would actually be helpful and comforting. Any advice on this?

Keep it simple and genuine. 'I'm so sorry to hear this, I'm here for you in any way you need.' Offer practical help like 'Can I bring you a meal?' or 'I can drive you to appointments.' Avoid platitudes or giving unsolicited advice. Just be a supportive presence.

First, just express your concern, 'I'm so sorry this is happening.' Then, perhaps quietly offer practical help they might not think to ask for, especially if they're worried about finances. 'Can I help research insurance options or hospital facilities?' or 'If you need help with bills, please tell me.' The medical costs can be overwhelming.

This is really tough news. Just tell them 'I'm here for you, whatever you need.' And if they're up for it, maybe suggest some gentle activities to keep their spirits up, like a short walk in fresh air, if their doctor approves. Don't preach diet or exercise, just offer support in general.

Oh my god, I would freeze if I heard that. It's so scary. I guess just saying 'I'm so sorry, I'm here for you' is the best, right? Like, what else can you even say? Did anyone else feel completely at a loss for words when this happened to someone they knew?

When someone gets such a diagnosis, they're likely feeling a whirlwind of emotions. Just acknowledge that it's devastating news and validate their feelings. 'This must be incredibly difficult to hear, and I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm here to listen, or just sit in silence, whatever you need.' That means a lot.

Beta, when someone hears such news, they just need to know they are not alone. Tell them 'I am thinking of you, and I will be here to support you through this.' Don't give false hope, just give steady presence. From my experience, that's what truly comforts people in difficult times.

Don't overthink it. Just say, 'Yaar, this is really tough news. I'm here for you, anything you need, seriously.' And then actually follow through. Offer concrete help, like 'Can I pick up your groceries?' or 'Do you want me to come over and just hang out?' Simple, direct, and kind.
