What stage of sleep is rem sleep?

My sleep tracker always shows different stages of sleep, and I keep hearing about REM sleep. What exactly is that stage, and how important is it?

Honestly, REM sleep is the Rapid Eye Movement stage, it's pretty crucial. This is where you usually dream the most vividly. It's one of the non-REM stages that come before it.

My smart watch tracks my sleep cycles, and REM is always listed as the final stage of a full sleep cycle, after N1, N2, and N3. It's when your brain is super active, almost like you're awake.

As far as I understand from my doctor, REM sleep is distinct from the other sleep stages (NREM 1, 2, 3). It’s considered a very active phase where a lot of dreaming happens and it's vital for cognitive functions. Getting enough of all stages is important, actually.

Oh, REM sleep! That's the stage where I usually have the most bizarre dreams, feels like a whole movie. Wish I could get more of it, seems like my brain is working overtime even when I'm sleeping these days, haan.

Haan, it's a specific stage, not just some part of sleep. Most people feel super refreshed if they get enough REM. Thoda yoga ya meditation can help improve sleep quality for all stages, I've heard.
