What side is good to sleep on when pregnant?

I'm expecting and trying to follow all the best practices, including how I sleep. My mother always said the left side is good, but I'm not sure why. Which side is generally considered good to sleep on when pregnant, and what are the benefits?

I tried so many home remedies for back pain and sleep issues during my pregnancy! Sleeping on the left side is definitely the best, and placing a soft rolled cotton sheet under your lower back or a pillow between your legs helps immensely. It gives so much relief to your aching joints.

My gynaecologist specifically explained that sleeping on the left side (SOS position) is ideal because it prevents the heavy uterus from pressing on the inferior vena cava, which is the main vein carrying blood back to your heart. It ensures maximum oxygen and nutrients reach the placenta.

Simply put, sleep on your left side. It is the best position for the baby's circulation and prevents your legs and ankles from swelling up too much. Buy a good pregnancy pillow and make it a habit from the second trimester itself.

Take it easy and don't worry if you find it hard to stay on one side all night. The left side is the healthiest option for the baby's blood supply, but your comfort matters too. If you feel tired, you can switch to the right side for a bit, just avoid sleeping flat on your back.

Sleeping on your left side is the best way to recover at night during pregnancy. Combined with some light prenatal walking in the evening (if your doctor has cleared you for it), it can really help you get a much deeper, more comfortable sleep.
