What not to say to your pain management doctor?

I have a chronic pain condition and see a pain management doctor regularly. I want to make sure I don't say anything that might sound like I'm seeking something else or being difficult. What are some things to avoid saying to your pain management doctor?

Oh, this is an interesting question. I never thought about it this way. So, should we avoid saying things that might sound like we are drug-seeking? Like, being too specific about wanting a certain type of painkiller? That makes sense, I think.

As a parent dealing with my child's chronic pain, I learned to always be honest but also very objective. Don't exaggerate the pain just to get stronger meds, it can backfire. And don't mention self-medicating or trying other people's prescriptions. Stick to facts about your pain and what helps/doesn't.

I had complications once because I wasn't clear with my doctor about what I was taking. So, never downplay your pain or pretend it's worse than it is. And don't hide any other medications or supplements you're taking, or any home remedies. Honesty is critical to avoid adverse reactions. Always be transparent with your doctor.

My friend who had a sports injury once told me not to sound like you're just looking for drugs. So, don't demand specific strong painkillers. And don't say you 'forgot' your old prescription because you want a new one. Just be chill and tell them what's really hurting and how much.

Haha, definitely don't walk in and say, 'Doc, I know more than you because I read it on WhatsApp!' Or, 'Can I get extra strong pain meds for my 'travel'?' Just be honest about your pain, where it is, and what you've tried. No need for drama or made-up stories, they've heard it all!

From my experience with managing PCOS, it's really important to be clear and not mislead your doctor. Don't exaggerate your pain, but also don't understate it. And definitely avoid mentioning if you're trying to get certain prescription drugs from other sources. Always be upfront about your symptoms and previous treatments.

When talking to any doc, especially for pain management, be clear and concise. Don't say you 'need' a specific medicine you Googled. Instead, describe your pain accurately, how it limits your activity (like gym or daily chores), and what treatments you've tried. Focus on functional improvement, not just medication.
