What not to do when you have a fever?

Kal se thoda fever hai, aur ghar pe mummy bol rahi hain yeh mat karo, woh mat karo. But I want to know scientifically, what are the key things one should really avoid doing when they have a fever, besides just resting?

Avoid rushing back to the office or working late on your laptop when you have a fever. Trying to push through the fatigue only prolongs the illness. Take complete bed rest, stay hydrated, and schedule a virtual doctor consultation if it doesn't drop in 48 hours.

Do not ignore a high fever that lasts more than 3 days, or is accompanied by a severe headache or stiff neck. Avoid self-medicating with strong antibiotics without a proper blood test. Please visit a clinic to rule out infections like dengue or typhoid.

When you have a fever, do not take a bath with freezing cold water as it can cause shivering and raise your internal temperature further. Instead, do gentle sponge bathing with normal tap water. Drink warm tulsi tea, but if the fever goes very high, please see a doctor immediately.

Do not make the mistake of stopping your fever medication the moment your temperature drops to normal. If the doctor prescribed a course, complete it, and don't rush back to your normal diet immediately. Give your gut a few days to recover too.

Hey, don't worry, just take it easy. Do not take hot showers or wrap yourself in heavy woolens. Keep yourself cool, drink plenty of water, and if the temperature spikes or you feel dizzy, let me or a doctor know right away.

Please don't double up on paracetamol doses or combine different over-the-counter cold medicines without reading the active ingredients. Overdosing on fever reducers is very easy and hard on your liver. Stick to the prescribed dosage intervals and drink plenty of fluids.

Do not try to sweat out the fever by doing workouts or heavy exercises. Your body needs all its energy to fight the infection, so absolute rest is required. Avoid any physical exertion until you are completely fever-free for at least 24 hours.

Stop drinking cold water or eating heavy, oily foods right now. Do not wrap yourself in three heavy blankets because that traps the heat and raises your body temperature even more. Keep the room airy, eat simple khichdi, and rest.

Beta, do not eat heavy roti or spicy sabzi when you have a fever. Your stomach becomes weak during this time. Drink warm rice gruel (kanji) and do not go out in the cold wind. Rest well.

Avoid drinking packaged fruit juices or sweet sports drinks to stay hydrated, as they can cause your blood sugar levels to spike rapidly during infection. Stick to plain water, coconut water, or clear vegetable broth, and monitor your glucose levels closely.
