What mental health conditions qualify for short term disability?

I've been feeling really overwhelmed at work lately and my therapist suggested I might need some time off. I'm wondering what kind of mental health conditions are generally considered for short-term disability benefits here in India. My HR team is not very clear on this.

Yaar, short-term disability for mental health, actually it can be for quite a few things. Like, if you have a really bad burnout from work, or a severe panic disorder episode, or even a sudden severe depression that needs you to take time off to recover. Your psychiatrist has to certify it, of course.

Short-term disability for mental health is usually for things like a severe depressive episode, acute anxiety attacks, or maybe even PTSD after a traumatic event that makes you unable to work for a temporary period. It needs proper doctor's certification. Just like with diabetes, proper management and doctor's advice is key here.

Beti, sometimes our minds also need rest, just like our bodies. If someone is truly unable to cope with their daily work due to great sadness or fear, for a short time, then yes, it can be considered. But it must be a real illness, not just a passing mood. A doctor's word is important. For small worries, sometimes a good oil massage and calming thoughts help, but this is different.

As a general rule, short-term disability for mental health is for acute, severe conditions that temporarily incapacitate you. Think severe panic attacks, major depressive episodes, or acute stress disorder. It's not a permanent thing, but a period to get intensive treatment or stabilize. Documentation from a psychiatrist is crucial for it to be approved.

Yeah, I've seen some of my friends take short-term leave for mental health. It's usually when they hit a real low point with depression or anxiety where they just can't function at work. It's not like you just feel sad, it's more like a breakdown or an episode that needs proper time away to heal. Always needs a doc's note and diagnosis, though.

My doctor explained that short-term disability for mental health conditions typically covers acute episodes where you are temporarily unable to perform your job duties. This includes severe major depressive episodes, acute stress reactions, severe anxiety disorders leading to functional impairment, or even bipolar episodes. It's not for general stress, but for conditions that are medically severe enough to require time off for treatment and recovery.
