What looks like a fever blister but isn't?

I have this small, painful bump on my lip that looks a lot like a fever blister, but I haven't had one in years. It's making me self-conscious. Are there other conditions or things that can look exactly like a fever blister but aren't?

Oh, be careful with this! I once had something on my lip that I thought was just a stubborn fever blister. Ignored it for too long, and it turned out to be something else entirely that needed a specific cream. Don't assume. If it's not going away or looks unusual, just show it to a doctor or dermatologist. Better safe than sorry.

My dermatologist explained this to me once. What looks like a fever blister (herpes simplex) but isn't could be an aphthous ulcer, commonly known as a canker sore. These are usually inside the mouth, not outside, and aren't contagious. Sometimes even angular cheilitis, which are cracks at the corners of the mouth, can be confused. It's important to know the difference for proper treatment.

Often, an aphthous ulcer (canker sore) can be mistaken for a fever blister, though canker sores are typically found inside the mouth and are not viral. Also, sometimes a small pimple or a minor irritation can resemble one. The key difference is fever blisters are caused by the herpes simplex virus and are highly contagious.

Don't fret too much about distinguishing it yourself. There are indeed non-herpes lesions that mimic fever blisters. The most common is a canker sore, which typically occurs inside the mouth. Also, sometimes a simple irritation or a small pimple can appear similar. If you're concerned or it's not healing, just get a doctor to take a look; they can tell you exactly what it is and how to treat it.

Keeping active helps with overall immunity, but for specific skin issues like blisters, you need proper medical advice. Things like canker sores (aphthous ulcers) can look like fever blisters but aren't viral. If you're unsure, just consult a dermatologist. No amount of walking will clear up a specific lesion if it's something that needs medication.

In my time, we just called everything 'chhala' (sore) or 'phunsi' (pimple) on the lip! But yes, there are things like those canker sores, which are very painful but not like the fever blisters that spread. My granddaughter gets them inside her mouth. Don't worry too much, but if it doesn't heal, a doctor can tell you what it truly is.

Hello! It's a common confusion. Many things can resemble a fever blister but aren't. The most common is a canker sore, which is an open, painful ulcer, usually inside the mouth, and not contagious. Sometimes even a small bacterial infection or a blocked pore can look similar on the lip. If it's persistent or painful, best to get it checked by a doctor or dentist for proper identification and care.
