What is the root word for pain?

My English teacher asked us this question in class, and I couldn't find the answer. It's for a word origins project, so just need to know the basic root.

Understanding the origins of words can be fascinating, just like understanding the origin of our own pain can be. Sometimes pain is not just physical, it's emotional too. Knowing the root helps us address it better, in all forms.

Interesting question! Learning about root words is like understanding the foundation. Similarly, to manage pain, understanding its root cause is key. Once you know, often some light exercise, if allowed by your doc, can help. Keep moving!

My doctor, who is a linguistics enthusiast actually, once told me that 'pain' traces back to the Latin word 'poena', which means 'penalty' or 'punishment'. It's quite profound when you think about it, how the perception of pain was linked to consequences in ancient times. Also related to the Greek 'poinē'.

Oh, this is an interesting one. Does anyone else get really anxious about explaining their pain to doctors, and then they don't understand? Maybe knowing the root word helps me feel like I have more control over understanding it, haha.

Haha, nice question! 😄 The root word for 'pain' comes from the Latin 'poena', meaning penalty or suffering. Pretty deep, right? 🤔
