What is the mental health parity act?

My company is updating its health insurance policy, and there's talk about 'mental health parity'. Can anyone explain what the mental health parity act is and how it impacts insurance coverage for mental health?

Though 'Mental Health Parity' is a term often used for US laws, in India we have our own equivalent under the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. Section 21 of this Act makes it mandatory for all insurance companies to provide medical insurance for mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. It is a huge step for healthcare rights.

Basically, it means insurance companies cannot discriminate against mental health issues. If you are buying or renewing health insurance, make sure to read the policy document carefully. Ask the agent directly if they cover psychiatric hospitalizations without extra premium charges.

This parity rule is so important! It means your health insurance should treat a mental health hospitalization just like a cardiac or orthopedic issue. Always check your policy's fine print on your insurer's app to ensure they comply with IRDAI guidelines on mental health coverage.

I am no legal expert, but parity just means equal treatment, right? It's like how I demand equal share of paneer in the tikka! Jokes apart, it is great that insurance has to cover mental health treatments now because therapy and recovery can be quite expensive.

In our younger days, mental illness was never covered by insurance and families had to bear huge costs silently. Things have improved so much now with these new parity regulations. If your family is facing such issues, do not hesitate to claim insurance benefits as per the law.
