What is the difference between typhus and typhoid fever?

I've heard people use the terms 'typhus' and 'typhoid fever' interchangeably, but I suspect they are different. Can someone clarify the distinction between them? My relative had typhoid last year.

Both are fevers, so it's very easy to confuse them, ma. Typhus is transmitted by tiny insects, like lice or fleas. Typhoid, on the other hand, is from contaminated food or water, like when hygiene is not so good. My grandmother always said cleanliness is next to godliness. For proper diagnosis, always trust the doctor, they will run tests.

Oh God, another confusing pair of diseases! I always get worried when I hear about fevers, especially with so many similar names. So Typhus is from insects, right? Like, do I need to worry if I go to an old place? And Typhoid is from food/water? It's so much to keep track of, but I guess knowing the cause helps in prevention. Stay safe everyone!

This is a classic example of why you can't self-diagnose from the internet. Typhus and Typhoid are caused by entirely different bacteria (Rickettsia for typhus, Salmonella for typhoid) and spread in different ways (insects vs. contaminated food/water). Symptoms can overlap, so a proper medical test is the only way to know. Don't ever rely on remedies or guesses; consult a doctor.

Initially, I ignored a prolonged fever thinking it was just a common cold, which was a huge mistake. Both typhus and typhoid can be very serious if not treated. Typhoid is generally from bad food/water, while typhus is from insect bites. Symptoms can feel similar, so never guess. If you have a high fever, please get it checked by a doctor right away. My delay led to a lot of complications.

Okay, so here's the simplified version. Typhoid is caused by a type of Salmonella bacteria, and you usually get it from consuming contaminated food or water. Think bad street food. Typhus is caused by different bacteria (Rickettsia or Orientia) and is spread by vectors like lice, fleas, or mites. So, different bugs causing them, different ways they spread, but both are serious fevers. Need a doctor to confirm which one.
