What is the difference between carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis?

I've been having some hand and wrist pain lately, and my colleague said it could be either carpal tunnel or arthritis. How do I know which one it is, what's the difference between them?

I panicked completely when my wrist started hurting, thinking I had chronic arthritis at 30! Turns out it was just carpal tunnel from typing too much, which is just a compressed nerve. A simple wrist splint and some breaks resolved it. Don't worry, get it checked by a doc and it will likely be fine.

I remember crying from the pain in my hands, thinking my joints were failing. Carpal tunnel is a pinched nerve in your wrist that causes numbness and tingling in your fingers, whereas arthritis is actual joint wear and tear or inflammation. It is so hard to do daily chores with hand pain, please see an orthopedic doctor soon to get relief.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on a nerve in your wrist, leading to tingling, while arthritis is inflammation of the wrist or finger joints themselves. It can be very uncomfortable, so I hope you find some relief. Please visit a doctor for a proper checkup.

Carpal tunnel is all about a pinched nerve in your wrist, like a traffic jam for your hand signals! Arthritis is about joint pain and swelling. Both are manageable, so don't stress and get a quick consultation with a physiotherapist or doctor.

If you feel numbness in your thumb and index finger, it is likely carpal tunnel. If the joints are stiff, swollen, and ache in the morning, it points more toward arthritis. I always suggest patients get a professional opinion instead of guessing, as the treatments for nerves and joints are completely different.

While carpal tunnel affects the median nerve in the wrist, arthritis directly damages the joint cartilage. It is very dangerous to self-treat hand numbness or stiffness. Please consult a qualified neurologist or orthopedic doctor to get a nerve conduction study or X-ray done safely.
