What is the best antidepressant for nerve pain?

My father has been having this terrible nerve pain in his legs after his surgery. The doctor mentioned antidepressants might help with the pain, but there are so many types. Which one is generally considered effective for nerve pain?

For nerve pain, certain antidepressants like tricyclics (e.g., Amitriptyline) or SNRIs (like Duloxetine) are often prescribed. I was on Duloxetine for my sciatica, and it really helped alongside physical therapy. But this is highly individualized, please talk to your neurologist or pain specialist. They will determine the right one for you based on your specific condition and other medications.

Oh, I didn't know antidepressants could be used for nerve pain too. Is it like, a common treatment? My doctor mentioned something about nerve pain but didn't say antidepressant. Should I ask them about it?

Nerve pain is truly debilitating, and it can take a huge toll on your mental health too. It's tough, I know. It's important to remember that these medicines aren't just for 'depression' in the common sense, but they also help manage the pain signals. Please consult a specialist who can guide you to find relief. Don't suffer in silence.

Antidepressants for nerve pain? Sounds like my brain and body need different therapists! 😄 But seriously, my friend was prescribed one for her back pain and she said it really helped. Just make sure you get it from a proper doc, because playing doctor with these meds is a bad idea, trust me!
