What is splitting in mental health?

I was reading an article about personality disorders and came across the term 'splitting in mental health'. What exactly does splitting mean in this context? Is it a common coping mechanism or a symptom of a specific condition?

Splitting is when you see people or situations as all good or all bad, no in-between. I've struggled with this; it makes relationships really hard because your feelings can flip so quickly. It's a coping mechanism, but a really painful one.

Splitting is a defense mechanism where you struggle to hold contradictory thoughts or feelings about someone or something. You see them as either entirely good or entirely bad. It's a common feature in Borderline Personality Disorder. Definitely needs professional intervention.

Splitting is a serious mental health concept, often associated with conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder. If you or someone you know is exhibiting signs of it, please, please consult a psychiatrist or therapist. It's not something to self-diagnose or try to fix alone.

Splitting in mental health? Oh god, sounds like another thing my brain does when I'm sleep-deprived! But no, seriously, it's about seeing things in black and white. Makes me glad my only 'splitting' right now is deciding between coffee or more coffee.

Splitting in mental health is a way of seeing things in extremes, either good or bad. While diet can help general well-being, for complex mental health concepts like this, professional therapy is needed, not just diet changes.

I've heard about 'splitting' from friends who are studying psychology. It sounds like a very difficult way to perceive the world, where things are either black or white. I can only imagine how confusing that must be for a person and their relationships.

From what I understand, splitting is a defence mechanism where someone can't integrate positive and negative qualities of themselves or others. It's often seen in certain personality disorders. It sounds very challenging to live with, so support is crucial.
