What is sleep debt?

I've been consistently sleeping less than 6 hours a night due to work and now I feel constantly exhausted. My friend said I'm accumulating 'sleep debt'. What exactly is sleep debt and how does it affect you?

I totally get it, when you are busy with work or kids, you only sleep 5 hours a night and think you can catch up on weekends. That accumulated loss of sleep is called sleep debt. It really drains your mental peace, so try to get consistent rest every night.

Sleep debt is the difference between the sleep you need and the sleep you actually get. As someone managing diabetes, I can tell you that accumulating sleep debt raises cortisol levels, which directly spikes blood sugar. Consistent sleep is as important as dieting.

If sleep debt was real money, I would be absolutely bankrupt by now! It is just the total amount of sleep you owe your body from all those late-night scrolling sessions. Trust me, your body always collects its dues eventually through dark circles and midday crashes.

I used to suffer from severe fatigue and concentration issues because of sleep debt. I realized I couldn't 'repay' a week of poor sleep just by sleeping all Sunday. Keeping a strict bedtime of 10:30 PM every day was the only thing that worked for me.

Basically, if you need 8 hours of sleep but only sleep 6 hours for three days, you have a 6-hour sleep debt. I used to do this during exam weeks and my brain would just stop functioning. Sleeping 12 hours on Sunday doesn't really fix the body's fatigue, honestly.
