What is sleep attack?

Sometimes, I suddenly feel extremely sleepy during the day, even after a full night's rest, and it's hard to stay awake. It feels like a 'sleep attack'. Is this a real medical term, and what does it mean?

I thought a sleep attack was just that heavy food coma I get after eating a massive plate of butter chicken and biryani! But medically, it is actually a sudden, uncontrollable urge to sleep during the day, which can be linked to conditions like narcolepsy.

Yes, sleep attacks are sudden episodes of falling asleep without warning, which can be quite dangerous. If you are experiencing this while driving or working, please consult a neurologist immediately.

A sleep attack refers to an abrupt and overwhelming onset of sleep, which is a classic symptom of narcolepsy or severe sleep disorders. Since this can significantly compromise your safety, a professional evaluation by a neurologist or sleep specialist is highly recommended.

A sleep attack is a sudden, uncontrollable urge to sleep, which can disturb your daily life. Just like I monitor my blood pressure to keep my heart healthy, you must get your neurological and sleep health evaluated by a specialist if you face these sudden episodes.

I used to get these intense sleep crashes in college and thought I was just lazy. It turned out to be a severe vitamin deficiency combined with a sleep cycle issue. If your body is just shutting down randomly during the day, get some basic blood work done.

At my age, I get a minor 'sleep attack' every afternoon during my office presentations! But honestly, if you are literally passing out mid-conversation or while walking, that is a serious medical issue and not just normal tiredness. Go see a doctor.
