What is mental health first aid?

Someone at my office mentioned 'mental health first aid' during a discussion about workplace wellness. I'm curious to know what this is. Is it similar to physical first aid, but for mental crises?

In our times we didn't have this term, but it simply means supporting someone who is going through a sudden panic or emotional breakdown until professional help arrives. Listening to them calmly without judgment is the best first aid you can offer, beta.

It is just being there for a friend when they are having a panic attack or extreme stress. You basically help them breathe, calm down, and make sure they feel safe. It's so important because sometimes people just need a comforting, non-judgmental presence in that exact moment.

It is like basic CPR but for mental health crisis. There are even apps and short online courses that teach you how to identify signs of anxiety, depression, or substance abuse in colleagues and help them connect with professionals.

Just like keeping a sugar candy handy for a diabetic's low sugar is emergency first aid, mental health first aid is about knowing how to handle an immediate emotional crisis. It is a critical skill because severe mental stress can spike blood pressure and glucose levels instantly.

I used to panic completely when my roommate had severe anxiety attacks, thinking it was a medical emergency. Once I learned about mental health first aid, I realized that just staying calm, helping them do deep breathing, and reassuring them makes a huge difference.
