What is kidney infection treatment?

I've been having some dull pain in my lower back, and my friend suggested it might be a kidney infection. What kind of treatment is usually given for a kidney infection? Should I be worried?

The main treatment is a course of antibiotics, but you will need a urine culture test first which costs around 500 to 800 rupees. Plan for a doctor's consultation fee as well, and don't skip the full course of medicines even if you feel better in two days.

It requires antibiotic treatment from a doctor, so don't try to sweat it out at the gym. Rest up, pause your heavy workouts, eat light home-cooked meals, and drink lots of water to help your body fight off the infection.

When I had it, my nephrologist explained that treatment depends on the severity. It always starts with targeted antibiotics based on your urine culture report, along with paracetamol for fever and pain, and sometimes IV fluids if you are vomiting.

Along with the antibiotics prescribed by your doctor, you should track your daily water intake using a health app to ensure you are drinking at least 2.5 to 3 liters. Keeping consistent hydration levels helps in a faster recovery.

My sister was hospitalized for a severe kidney infection, and they treated her with IV antibiotics and fluids. I highly recommend visiting a good hospital and asking your doctor clearly about the dosage and duration of antibiotics to avoid recurrence.

Please don't try drinking cranberry juice or barley water to cure a full-blown kidney infection. It is a bacterial infection that requires prescription antibiotics from a urologist, otherwise it can lead to permanent kidney damage or sepsis.

For a mild kidney infection, oral antibiotics like fluoroquinolones are usually prescribed for 7 to 14 days. Make sure to complete the entire bottle even if your fever drops, and keep drinking plenty of water to help flush out the bacteria.
