What is key difference between individual and group health insurance?

My company provides group health insurance, but I'm thinking of getting an individual policy too for my family. I want to understand the main differences between individual and group health insurance policies before I decide. What should I be looking out for?

The main difference is ownership. Individual insurance is what you buy yourself and customize according to your lifestyle and health goals. Group insurance is usually given by your company, which is great but ends the day you leave the job, so having your own backup is always smart.

Group insurance is like a free office lunch—good while it lasts, but you can't rely on it forever! Individual insurance is your own kitchen, you have to pay for it yourself but it stays with you even if you get fired or retire.

Group health insurance covers a whole bunch of people under one common corporate plan, usually without medical tests. Individual insurance is dedicated completely to your own peaceful wellbeing, where the policy is crafted specifically for your personal health needs.

With my thyroid issues, I realized that group policies from office often don't cover pre-existing diseases from day one or might have limits. An individual policy allows you to declare your conditions and get them covered properly after a waiting period, which is safer for long-term health management.

In group insurance, you don't have to do any medical checkups to get covered, which is handy. But since I have high blood pressure, I bought a separate individual policy because it gives me higher sum insured limits and covers my specific medical needs permanently.
