What is good sleep hygiene?

My doctor told me that I need to improve my sleep hygiene because I'm having trouble sleeping. I'm not entirely sure what that means or how to do it. Could someone explain what good sleep hygiene involves?

Good sleep hygiene changed my life! I used to sleep all weird hours. What worked for me was setting a fixed bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends. Also, making my bedroom completely dark and cool, and stopping all screen time an hour before bed. It takes effort, but totally worth it.

Honestly, good sleep hygiene is just having a solid routine, right? Like, I try to stop looking at my phone at least 30 mins before bed and read a book instead. Also, a warm shower before bed makes such a difference! It really helps my body relax and get ready for sleep.

Good sleep hygiene means creating the best possible environment and habits for restful sleep. This includes maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, ensuring your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool, and avoiding caffeine and heavy meals close to bedtime. It's about respecting your body's need for proper rest.

Good sleep hygiene is non-negotiable for productivity and health. Maintain a strict sleep schedule, even on weekends. Your bedroom is for sleep and intimacy, not TV or work. Avoid caffeine after lunch and heavy meals close to bedtime. Simple rules, huge impact.

I track my sleep with my smartwatch and it has made me so conscious of my sleep hygiene! Key things are a consistent bedtime (the app shows when I deviate!), cutting off screens an hour before bed, and keeping my room pitch dark. My sleep score definitely improves when I follow these!

Sleep hygiene... it sounds like another thing I have to perfect and worry about, haha! But actually, I've realized it's mostly common sense. Like, don't drink coffee late, don't watch action movies just before bed. Try to relax, don't stare at the clock. It's hard sometimes, but worth the effort for feeling less tired.

For specific advice on sleep hygiene, it's always best to consult a sleep specialist or even your general physician, especially if you have chronic issues. They can give you tailored advice. But generally, they'll emphasize a consistent routine, avoiding stimulants, and creating a comfortable sleep environment. Don't overlook the importance of professional advice here.

For good sleep hygiene, integrating calming practices before bed can be immensely helpful. Gentle stretching, 10-15 minutes of slow breathing (pranayama), or a short meditation can signal your body it's time to wind down. It creates a peaceful transition from active day to restful night.
