What is ect in mental health?

A documentary I watched mentioned 'ECT in mental health'. I'm curious to know more about this. What does ECT stand for and how is it used in treating mental health conditions?

I was just watching a documentary about mental health and they mentioned ECT. It sounds pretty intense. From what I understood, it's like a last resort for severe depression or other conditions when nothing else works. Is that right?

ECT, Electroconvulsive Therapy, right? We learned about it in psych class. It sounds a bit scary, but actually, it's highly effective for very severe, treatment-resistant depression or bipolar disorder. They use controlled electric currents to induce a seizure in the brain. It's not like in old movies anymore, it's quite safe now apparently.

I totally get why ECT might sound intimidating, given its past portrayal. But in modern mental healthcare, it's a carefully administered procedure used when other treatments fail for severe conditions like major depression. It's done under anaesthesia, so the patient doesn't feel anything during the process. It's a lifeline for some.

ECT? I haven't heard of this much before. Is it commonly used in India? And does it have many side effects? I hope it's not too painful.

ECT... the idea of it always makes me anxious, thinking about the brain and electricity! But I also know it can be a life-saving treatment for people struggling deeply. If a doctor suggests it, it means they've explored other options, and it's a well-considered step. It's complex, but important for those who need it.

Yeah, my aunt actually had ECT for her severe depression when nothing else was working. It sounds extreme, but for her, it made a huge difference. She was able to function again after many years. It's not a first choice, but it can be really effective for some people, doc-supervised of course.
