What is considered severe sleep apnea?

My doctor said I have 'severe sleep apnea' after my sleep study. What makes it severe, like how many times do I stop breathing? I am trying to understand the implications for my health.

Severe sleep apnea is when your breathing stops more than 30 times per hour during sleep. Before you go for an expensive sleep study which can cost around 10,000 to 15,000 rupees, check if your insurance covers it or look for a government hospital with good sleep labs.

Having sleep apnea can seriously mess up your morning fasting blood sugar levels. It is considered severe if you have over 30 breathing pauses an hour, which starves your body of oxygen. Getting this treated is very important for overall metabolic health.

When my husband was snoring terribly and gasping for breath, we went to Manipal Hospital. The doctor explained that severe sleep apnea means your oxygen drops dangerous levels many times a night. Ask your doctor for a proper sleep test to know for sure.

I found out that my uncontrolled high blood pressure was actually linked to severe sleep apnea. If you are waking up choking or feeling exhausted every single day, get your BP and sleep checked. It is highly risky for the heart.

My smart ring showed my blood oxygen levels dropping below 85% at night, which prompted me to search. Severe sleep apnea is diagnosed when your Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) is above 30. Track your sleep metrics but definitely get a medical-grade test done.
