What is cmc arthritis?

My grandmother has been complaining about severe pain in her hand, near the thumb area. The doctor mentioned 'CMC arthritis' and we're trying to understand what that means. Could someone explain what CMC arthritis is in simple terms?

I was looking this up recently because my aunt had severe pain while pinching or holding a cup. CMC stands for carpometacarpal joint, and arthritis there makes it really hard to do simple thumb movements. It is quite common as people age, but physical therapy and braces can help manage it.

CMC arthritis is basically wear and tear of the joint at the base of your thumb. If you are planning to get this checked, an X-ray is usually required which is quite affordable, around 300 to 500 rupees in local labs. Don't go for expensive MRI scans immediately unless a specialist explicitly asks you to.

I cannot suggest any medical treatments, but I was diagnosed with CMC arthritis in my left thumb last year. I personally found that wearing a simple thumb splint during heavy work and doing minor hand exercises prescribed by my physiotherapist helped reduce my discomfort to a great extent.

I totally get it, thumb pain can make even holding a phone or opening a jar feel like a massive task. CMC arthritis affects the joint at the very bottom of your thumb and can be quite nagging. Please be gentle with your hands, use warm compresses, and consult a doctor for some soothing exercises.

Oh God, I started feeling a slight ache in my thumb yesterday and immediately panicked thinking it is CMC arthritis. It is the arthritis of the thumb joint, and it can be really painful and frustrating for daily work. Please don't stress, get a proper diagnosis from an orthopedist so you don't worry needlessly like me.
