What is chronic kidney disease?

My uncle recently got diagnosed with some kidney problem, and the doctor used this term 'chronic kidney disease'. I'm a bit worried and want to understand what exactly it means.

Honestly, read about this at 3 AM while trying to sleep and ended up waking up my whole family in a panic. It just means the kidneys are not filtering stuff properly over a long time, like a choked water filter at home. Don't do middle-of-the-night Google searches, it is the worst for your peace of mind.

In kidney issues, what you eat becomes extremely crucial because the body can't filter out extra minerals. For vegetarians, managing protein intake like paneer and dal becomes a fine balance that needs a doctor's guidance. Please don't start any high-protein or random detox diets without asking a renal dietician first.

When my father was diagnosed with CKD, I cried for three days straight thinking about dialysis and what not. It is so heavy to process when a doctor tells you your organs are failing slowly. If you are going through this anxiety, I totally understand your pain, but please know that medical science has progressed a lot to help manage it.

I was just reading about this on a health blog yesterday because my friend's dad has it. It basically means the kidneys have some damage and can't clean your blood as well as they should, and this develops slowly over years. Seems like high BP and diabetes are the main reasons behind it.

My uncle got diagnosed with this and we all thought it was the end of the world. But actually, if you catch it early, it is highly manageable with just routine medicine and diet changes. His reports have been stable for three years now, so please don't lose sleep over the word 'chronic'.

Whenever I hear 'chronic' I start imagining the worst possible scenarios and start checking my own pulse. But from what I read, it just means a long-term issue that needs careful monitoring, not a sudden emergency. Just make sure to get a proper nephrologist's opinion and stick to the regular tests.
